Product FAQ

Find the answers to the most commonly asked questions about Eagle Brand® products.

How long can I keep Eagle Brand® Sweetened Condensed Milk on my pantry shelf?

Unopened and stored in a cool, dry area, Eagle Brand Sweetened Condensed Milk will last for about two years. Please refer to the Best If Used By date.

How do I store unused Eagle Brand Sweetened Condensed Milk?

Cover any opened Eagle Brand Sweetened Condensed Milk with either plastic wrap or any plastic lid, and store in the refrigerator. It should keep in the refrigerator for 3-4 days.

How can I tell if my Eagle Brand Sweetened Condensed Milk is outdated?

Always reference the Best If Used By date printed on the bottom of the can. We have been printing readable BIUB dates on our products since 2004. If you cannot find a readable BIUB date or see a code similar to P2174A*S1, your can is outdated, as those manufacturing codes were used prior to 2004.

Can the color of Eagle Brand Sweetened Condensed Milk vary?

Yes. Eagle Brand Sweetened Condensed Milk should have an off white color. However, as the product ages it may darken in color and thicken. As long as the Best If Used By date is still current, the product can still be used. The change in color or texture should not affect recipe results.

Where can I find the Eagle Brand Dessert Kits?

Unfortunately, due to lack of demand the Eagle Brand Dessert Kits have been discontinued and are no longer available. Recipes similar to those featured on the Eagle Brand Dessert Kits are available on our website recipe page.

Is Eagle Brand Chocolate Sweetened Condensed Milk still available?

Unfortunately, Eagle Brand Chocolate Sweetened Condensed Milk was discontinued due to lack of demand. However, you can make your own version by adding 2 ounces of melted unsweetened chocolate squares or ¼ cup of cocoa powder to one can of Eagle Brand Chocolate Sweetened Condensed Milk.

What is the difference between Eagle Brand Sweetened Condensed Milk, Filled Milk, and Evaporated Milk?
  • Sweetened Condensed Milk: Whole milk combined with beet sugar or cane sugar, with about 60% of the water removed.
  • Filled Milk: Evaporated milk with the butterfat removed and replaced with soy oil. It begins as whole milk which has had the butterfat removed (or skimmed) and replaced with soy oil. The mix of skim milk and soy oil is then evaporated.
  • Evaporated Milk: Evaporated milk is fresh, whole milk with about 50% of the water removed. The milk is "evaporated" by removing enough water so that it will make whole milk when diluted with an equal amount of water.
If my recipe calls for Eagle Brand Sweetened Condensed Milk is there a substitute I can use?

You may choose to substitute with Eagle Brand Low Fat or Fat Free Sweetened Condensed Milk. Using a filled or evaporated milk would not be recommended.

Is it safe to boil my can of Eagle Brand Sweetened Condensed Milk to make caramel sauce?

No. For safety reasons, we do not recommend heating a can, opened or unopened, of Eagle Brand Sweetened Condensed Milk. The current can is not designed to withstand high temperatures. Instead, please follow these instructions for making Homemade Caramel.

May I drink Eagle Brand Sweetened Condensed Milk?

Eagle Brand Sweetened Condensed Milk is a ready to use product and may be consumed without any additional preparation.
