Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is a wonderful opportunity for gathering as a family, enjoying a football game, catching up with relatives and, of course, sharing a great meal.

Making Your Event Special

Decorations

Use a bale or two of hay as a porch display; add pumpkins and corn husks for color.

Use fallen leaves as a base for a decoration that runs down the middle of your table. Add twigs, or small branches, acorns, cones and an abundance of gourds and small pumpkins interspersed with flameless or electric candles.

Place a row of apples along the center of a table with just enough of the apple carved out to drop in flameless or electric candle.

Activities

Pin the Tail Feather on the Turkey: Tape a homemade picture of a turkey to the wall at a height that can be reached by the children. Blindfold each child for his turn, turn him around three times, and let him try to place the tail feather in the right spot. Once he places the feather on the poster, tape it onto that spot. The child who comes closest wins.

Ask your guests to say what they are thankful for. For a twist ask each one to add their reasons to what their predecessors said. You will be amazed to find how difficult it is to remember all of them at the end of one turn. The more participants the better.

Food Ideas

Create a buffet dessert table. Make Perfect Pumpkin Pie the centerpiece, and add other great treats like Harvest Apple Streusel Squares and Holiday Pumpkin Treats.

Make it a memorable meal with classic bread stuffing, roast turkey, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, seasonal vegetables, dinner rolls and Pumpkin Cheesecake Bars.

Plan to provide a traditional Thanksgiving feast, and then be creative with side dishes. Provide at least one low-calorie dish and a vegetarian option. Instead of candied sweet potatoes, steam seasonal vegetables for a healthy alternative. If you have a vegetarian in the family, make vegetable lasagna or combine pasta with their favorite vegetable to make a Pasta Primavera. Make the Marvelous Mustard with the Eagle Brand® Sweetened Condensed Milk, mayonnaise, Dijon mustard and a tablespoon of lemon juice. Use as a dipping sauce with salads and entrees.

Make sure you have disposable containers for your guests to take home leftovers. Print your favorite turkey leftover recipe on a 3 x 5" recipe card to give with the turkey.

Gift Ideas

Put decorative votive candles at each place setting and let each guest take them home as a party favor.

Flavored oils packaged in attractive jars or bottles make great Thanksgiving gifts. Place fresh herbs inside the jar or bottle and use a funnel to add the oil of your choice. Cork the container and place in the refrigerator for a few weeks to let the flavors mature. If the herbs don't look fresh when the container is removed from the refrigerator, replace them with a fresh supply. Decorate the container with ribbon, rope or materials of your choice.
